Meet Velma, the Velmio pregnancy chatbot. It’s normal to have many questions during pregnancy, so we designed Velma to be your on-demand virtual pregnancy assistant.

She uses the latest developments in natural language processing - the subfield of artificial intelligence that deals in language interactions between computers and humans - to understand your pregnancy questions and retrieve the most relevant information curated by our medical experts.

How to use Velma

Go to the Velma tab in the app. You can start communicating with Velma by typing “hi”.

Velma gives you an option to type your questions or use the clickable response options to navigate her interface.

We’re going to go through each of Velma’s main functionalities, starting with “Pregnancy by week”.

Pregnancy by week

This feature allows you to search Velma’s knowledge base for information about each week of pregnancy, including topics related to your baby’s development, changes to your body, common symptoms and self-care tips.

To activate this feature, say “hi” to Velma and select “Pregnancy by week” from her response options, or just type “Pregnancy by week” directly into the chat.

Velma will ask what week of pregnancy you would like to see information for - we’re going to type “6” for week 6. She will then ask you what topic you would like to see information for - we’re going to select “Common symptoms at week 6”.

Velma will fetch the relevant information from her knowledge base.

Common pregnancy questions

Velma has been trained by medical experts to answer a large range of common pregnancy questions.

To activate this feature, say “hi” to Velma and select “Common pregnancy questions” from her response options, or just type your question directly into the chat.

If you activate this feature by selecting “Common pregnancy questions”, Velma will ask you which topic you would like to explore. We’re going to select “Nutrition question topics”.

Velma will then display some subtopics for nutrition. We’re going to select “fish”.

Velma then fetches the information from her knowledge base.

Velma will also suggest some resources for additional reading if you’re interested, including pregnancy guidelines, medical research published in peer-reviewed journals and advice from other trusted sources.

Also keep in mind that you don’t need to use the response option buttons - you can just type your questions directly into the chat.

Search my data

The “Search my data” feature is especially powerful because Velma’s responses are completely tailored for you. This feature is very useful if you want to make sense of the data you track using the Velmio app.

To activate this feature, say “hi” to Velma and select “Search my data” from her response options, or just type “Search my data” directly into the chat.

Velma will ask you what type of data you want to search. We’re going to select “Insights about my nutrition”.

She will give you some options of nutrients to select from. We’re going to go with “Calcium”.

You can see that Velma has retrieved an average daily calcium intake of around 307 milligrams, which is below the recommended intake of 1000 milligrams.
