Most pools use chlorine to kill bacteria that can be dangerous to humans. Therefore, from the point of view of infection, swimming in a chlorinated pool is certainly safer than swimming in open water. However, when chlorine is added to water, it reacts with organic substances in the water (such as skin cells and body care products) to form various harmful by-products, such as trihalomethanes (a group of four chemical compounds, including chloroform).
For this reason, some studies suggest that swimming in pools during pregnancy may affect the baby. However, these studies also acknowledge that further research is needed over longer time frames to conclude if there is a significant risk. Therefore, experts still encourage swimming as a beneficial physical activity to undertake while pregnant.
